DESCRIPTIVE DATA

object type: Silver-gilt; the heavy gauge of metal with embossed, chased and cast ornament.  Standing on a low circular foot, the lower part of the body is decorated with two bands of gadroons, one radiating from the foot, the other just beneath the shoulder.  The flat circular top has a rope border round the mouth, then borders of vines, beads and gadroons.  The circular dished pull-off lid has a separate cover of acanthus foliage, which radiates from the cone-shaped finial, both of which are attached to the lid by means of a nut (replacement for the original).  The handle is cast in the shape of a serpent, which is reeded and crossed by five girdles.  It terminates in a scaly loop.  A chain is attached to the top of the serpent's head and the top of the finial.
