The birdcatcher stands in front of a white tree stump on a low white base with applied large coloured flowers and foliage. His left knee is bent, and in front of him, he carries a large brown bird cage, slung by a strap passing over his left shoulder and round his waist. The cage has two white perches, and on the floor sits a white bird. In his left hand, he holdsup a brown bird with black head and tail. He wears a wide drab-coloured hat caught up in front with a gold stud, a white cravat trailing away to his left, with a full black coat open at the neck to show the yellow lining, and a slit up the back and wrists to show the frilled sleeves on his shirts.
