The unglazed underside has a large D-shaped ventilation hole at the back opening into the glazed interior of the tree stump. The shallow base has two angles at the back, a curve on the proper right side, and two angles on the left. It rises up at the back into a low rock with a tall tree stump beside it. The gentleman stands on his left leg with his right advanced, resting his left elbow on the tree stum and holding a book to his chest in the other hand. He leans forward slightly and looks towards his right. His hair is dressed with curls at the sides and a long queue at the back. He wears a shirt with ruffles, a waistcoat, breeches, a cloak with two applied escallop shells on the front and back, and shoes with bows on top.
