object type: Sir Thomas Sidey was a New Zealand politician who is mainly remembered for his work towards the professionalisation of dentists and music teachers. Among his other concerns however was the New Zealand Local Time Bill, a long-running campaign to turn back the clocks in New Zealand so as to give more light in the evenings for pursuits such as sport and gardening. In an effort to obtain scientific backing for his claims about the health and welfare benefits of this measure, in his last years he endowed a prize at the New Zealand Institute to commemorate his work `for Summer Time', to be awarded for the best essay or thesis on the subject as decided by a panel of three medical experts. The medal was designed by Allan Wyon, and this is a bronze specimen from his workshop.
