object type: Cosmetic box and cover with cranes and clouds design. Stoneware, moulded, stamped, inlaid in black and white slip, and celadon glazed. The design of this flat box with bevelled edges is inlaid in black and white slip and consists of a roundel of small stamped florets surrounded by four flying cranes among stylised clouds and a band of lotus petals filled with rings. The sides of both box and cover are similarly inlaid with a band of white key-fret and one of small white rings, on the cover having black centres.  The glaze has a pale greyish-green celadon colour and is very thinly applied.  The base shows fairly large quartzite spur-marks.
