The finial is carved in the form of a snarling dog or grotesque with teeth bared; his eyes are steel pins; on the top of the creature's head is carved an acanthus leaf and scallop shell. Round the base of the handle is a white metal ferrule decorated with two bands of black enamel; above which are iron studs set into the ivory in groups of three to form a geometric pattern.
