The bird displays the species' spectacular plumage with a black head with white facial patches and throat, contrasting with the rich golden-yellow body feathers that show intricate scaled patterning across the breast and flanks. The wings show barred patterns in brown and black. The bird's remarkably long tail has detailed chevron markings characteristic of this Chinese endemic species.The painting demonstrates the fine brushwork characteristic of Chinese export art from the late 18th or early 19th century, combining ornithological documentation and traditional Chinese flower-and-bird painting style.
