IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 18647 accession number: HEN.M.147-1933 DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Saturday 6 August 2011 updated: Wednesday 11 January 2023 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: Pair of elbow gauntlets, for light field use. Each formed of an elbow-length, slightly flared, tubular cuff, five metacarpal-plates, a knuckle-plate, two finger-plates, and the main plate of a hinged thumb-defence. The cuff, which is slightly shaped to the point of the elbow, is formed of a medially-ridged outer plate, and a considerably shorter inner plate. The latter is riveted within the former. The upper edge of the cuff has a plain inward turn accompanied by a recessed border that projects downwards as a chevron medially. The upper edge is cut off obliquely to clear the inside of the elbow. The lower edge of the cuff is overlapped by five medially-ridged, upward overlapping metacarpal-plates of which the last is longer than the rest, and overlapped by the knuckle-plate. The knuckle-plate is decorated with a prominent transverse rib of boxed form. It overlaps two downward-overlapping finger-plates of which the second has a plain inward at its lower edge. Attached by an iron hinge to the front end of the metacarpal-plate is the main-plate of a thumb-defence. The latter is of medially-ridged, lozenge-shaped form with a truncated lower end. The main plate of the right thumb-defence is restored. Each gauntlet is fitted with a modern strap across the inside of the wrist and two straps across the palm of the hand. The strap across the wrist engages a single-ended, tongued iron buckle in the case of the left gauntlet, and a modern brass stud in the case of the right gauntlet. Each gauntlet has the remains of a leather suspension-loop riveted with the upper edge of its cuff. title: gauntlets NOTES ----- type: history note value: Mr James Stewart Henderson of 'Abbotsford', Down Road, St Helen's Park, Hastings, Sussex.
