IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 18661 accession number: HEN.M.159B-1933 DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Saturday 6 August 2011 updated: Wednesday 11 January 2023 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: Poll-plate of a shaffron, for field use. Formed of a single plate strongly curved transversely and slightly curved longitudinally. It has a straight rear edge and a very slightly convex front edge. Its front corners are strongly cut out in concave curves to clear the horse's ears. The rear edge and the cut-outs of the poll-plate have strongly notched inward turns accompanied by recessed borders. A recessed band, merging into the rear border, decorates the plate medially. A modern, brass-capped, round-headed rivet with a circular, internal washer located at the centre of the front edge of the plate, retains a small fragment of the leather hinge that at one time connected the poll-plate to its shaffron. Later holes at either end of the front edge of the poll-plate are now plugged with round-headed rivets of brass. A pair of lace-holes at the centre of the rear edge of the poll-plate, originally serving to connect it to a crinet, are now also plugged with brass-capped, round-headed rivets. Similar rivets plug holes at either end of the rear edge of the poll-plate, originally serving to attach the straps that fastened the plate around the horse's neck. A small, modern wiring-hole is pierced just to the outside of each of these rivets. Together with the poll-plate HEN.M.159A-1933 title: poll-plate NOTES ----- type: history note value: Mr James Stewart Henderson of 'Abbotsford', Downs Road, St Helen's Park, Hastings, Sussex.
