One of two historiated initials
This cutting is a historiated initial ‘S’ from a large choir book depicting Louis XII, in his coronation robe, healing sufferers of scrofula. French and English kings were thought to be able to cure this particular ailment through their Royal Touch. The practice served to further justify their rule as lawful and divinely ordained.
Cuttings, that is, fragments from medieval manuscripts, were easier to sell than entire books. It therefore became common practice to cut out folios or details from pages and sell them as individual, miniature works of art. The size of this initial suggests that the parent manuscript from which it was cut was on a very large, imposing scale.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 168 x 183 mm, reverse obscured by paper mount, with letter forms and red four-line musical staves partially visible.
DECORATION:
Historiated initials in blue, ornamented in white, on gold ground with blue, orange and green scrolling vine motifs in the four corners: S, Louis XII, dressed in his coronation robe, accompanied by a bishop and cardinal, extends his healing touch to people suffering from scrofula.37referenceexhibition-2490adlib-exhibition-2490074e2327-6034-340d-a3b5-d7981138592bColour: The Art and Science of Illuminated Manuscripts15-088referenceexhibition-3315adlib-exhibition-331536578f86-1273-3840-aed2-973e3e65e938The Human Touch: Making Art, Leaving TracesMarlay cutting Fr. 16a1accession numberMarlay cutting Fr. 16a209504priref209504project ID1358urihttps://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/209504https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/209504referenceagent-149638adlib-agent-1496387376d833-d0a7-3be0-916e-9c892b7a24d8The Fitzwilliam MuseumBequeathed by Charles Brinsley Marlayreferenceagent-149674adlib-agent-149674de1bf9dd-2091-39ca-85f6-41e736f6e32bMarlay, Charles Brinsley191219121912bequeathed15001500circa1500referenceterm-106602adlib-term-106602bbb4c00f-eefa-3d64-9441-7a75aa07736e16th Centuryreferenceterm-129470adlib-term-1294708353db27-fba9-33c1-94a1-f268fd2a2d21literalFranceFrancecountryliteralNorthNorthregionParisreferenceterm-109839adlib-term-109839a05aa073-8b9b-3c97-ac81-9961b64b38c0pigmentsreferenceterm-32656adlib-term-3265671b38be4-d251-39f7-8e2d-a0df2dd6e135inkreferenceterm-39593adlib-term-39593e3e2a3f8-2433-3f63-9bcf-e776644d312dgoldreferencemedia-202322adlib-media-20232278cf2f54-79f5-379a-b6e4-4c26fb330e0bjpegmsspb/msspb17/Marlay_20cutting_20Fr_16a_201106_mfj22_mas.jpg1heightpixels926widthpixels102416162616815321imagejpegmsspb/msspb17/mid_Marlay_20cutting_20Fr_16a_201106_mfj22_mas.jpg1heightpixels452widthpixels50016162616815321imagejpegmsspb/msspb17/Marlay_20cutting_20Fr_16a_201106_mfj22_mas.jpg1heightpixels926widthpixels102416162616815321imagejpegmsspb/msspb17/preview_Marlay_20cutting_20Fr_16a_201106_mfj22_mas.jpg1heightpixels226widthpixels25016162616815321image0media
