object type: A large card of lace-paper of a design with gothic arches and tracery with ivy leaves entwined and a statue of a medieval prince on the left. A pale pink slip-paper is inserted behind. A verse, mainly hand-written in blue ink: "Of all the flowers the Spring has met / And it has met with many / Thou art to me the fairest yet / and loveliest of any". The first two letters of the verse are illuminated; the letter 'O' is designed from collage elements of cut-paper flowers and foliage and with a watercolour wash inside against which a pair of cut-paper and hand-coloured doves are affixed. The letter 'f' is hand-painted with additional cut-paper and hand-coloured flowers. Net clouds (discoloured) and affixed onto the paper above. "Dobbs, Kidd & Co" blind-stamped onto the base of the fluted column at lower left. A Whatman paper watermark is visible on the inside page. The inside of the card is blank. This card is apparently mounted into the album with its original envelope, P.14344-R-8. A graphite inscription on the album leaf below P.14344-R-9: "Valentine & envelope 1857 / Dobbs, Kidd & Co". The hand has been identified as belonging to Glaisher's friend, local Antiquarian, Catherine Parsons (1890-1956), who arranged and assembled his valentine albums in 1924. Her hand is seen elsewhere throughout album P.14344-R. The firm of Henry Dobbs traded as Dobbs, Kidd & Co. from 1851 into the 1890s.
