IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 215111 accession number: P.14414-R-120 DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Tuesday 14 February 2017 updated: Friday 26 January 2018 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: A lithographed proof for a valentine design in black ink on a single sheet of 4to-size thin, white wove paper (with losses around the edges) mounted onto a larger sheet of buff-coloured wove paper. A border of scrolls and putti playing musical instruments or displaying flower urns with doves and Cupid's bow with arrows at upper centre. At the centre is a small vignette of Cupid sitting on an anchor, ensnaring one of two birds in flight above him with a cord. Handwritten in graphite directly above the image, a title: 'Love & hope'. Handwritten in brown ink directly below the image, an underlined title: '_L'amour et L'espoir_ [love and hope]'. A hand-written verse in brown ink is written above and below the image: 'While hope remains dear Valentine / I'll not despair to call thee mine / For still that hope shall be / As pictured in the plate above / The anchor that sustains the love / I entertain for thee'. A partially erased inscription at upper centre is a direction for the positioning of the verse: '3 Valentine lines / at top 3 at bottom / to [...] ?poetry'. Another partially erased and illegible inscription in graphite below the image. Seems to be from the same series as the previous design in the album, P.14414-R-119. The design is unsigned, although the style is comparable with other valentine designs signed by British lithographer, Edward Gilks with which P.14414-R-120 is grouped in album P.14414-R. As Gilks emigrated to Australia in 1852, this design is most likely to have been produced either during Gilks's apprenticeship in London to Thomas Dean, between 1836 and 1843 or between 1844 and 1850 when he was in partnership with his brother Thomas, a wood-engraver, based at 4 Fenchurch Building, Fenchurch, London. title: Valentine card LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Paintings, Drawings and Prints creditline: Bequeathed by Dr J.
