IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 215181 accession number: P.14416-R-36 DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Tuesday 14 February 2017 updated: Friday 26 January 2018 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: A hand-coloured lithograph with an ornate printed 'frame' on pale pink wove paper. The frame surrounds an ornate roundel containing a half-length figure of a woman sitting in a chair seen in profile facing left and looking at a portrait of a man which she holds in her right hand. A verse is printed below: 'Beloved I needed not this boy / To keep thy memory dear / For in my grief and in my joy / Thy form is ever near, / So deeply graven on my heart / That only with my life 'twill part'. The verse suggests that this valentine was designed as a memorial to a dead lover or husband, or possibly to a dead son. The interior is blank. One of six valentines from the same series, all with the same ornate printed frame on pale pink or white paper, and which are mounted together in album P.14416-R. An inscription on the album leaf below P.14416-R-35 indicates that all six were bought by Glaisher for four shillings. The price was probably transcribed from a handwritten MS from second-hand bookseller, R.S. Frampton found on the back fly-leaf of album P.14416-R (See P.14416-R-L1), where P.14416-R-35 is listed with the description '& 5 similar (the six for) 4/0'. The other 5 can be identified as: P.14416-R-34, P.14416-R-36, P.14416-R-38, P.14416-R-39 and P.14416-R-40. P.14416-R-71, a larger card with an additional lithographed mock picture frame border, employs the same verse. title: Valentine card LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Paintings, Drawings and Prints creditline: Bequeathed by Dr J.
