Head and shoulders portrait of Augustus Henry Fitzroy, 3rd Duke of Grafton, in profile facing left, wearing a buckled queue wig and the robes of the Chancellor of Cambridge University. The sheet of india paper is laid down on a larger sheet of wove paper with a double-edged rectangular frame drawn around it in graphite. An inscription in pen and ink on the india paper sheet below the platemark: 'The Duke of Grafton etched by / Miss Norfolk from a drawing / made of him in the Senate House / at his Installation.'. The same hand is seen on an envelope accompanying another impression of this print in the collection of the British Museum: 1855,1208.307. It is possible that the author of the hand is printseller, William Smith (1808-1876). Amateur etcher, Jane Strange Norfolk (1743-1824), daughter of William Norfolk of Cambridge, drew and then later etched the head of the Duke of Grafton during his installation as Chancellor of the University of Cambridge in 1768.
