IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 225717 accession number: T.48-2018 DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Wednesday 21 November 2018 updated: Wednesday 26 April 2023 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: Darning sampler, with inscription ‘Ann Young / Sidcot School / 1811’ Darning sampler, linen, white on white, 19.2 cm x 18.76 cm Small samplers such as this were first made at Ackworth School, the first boarding school established by the London Meeting of the Society of Friends (Quakers). The tradition was continued at Sidcot, founded as a Quaker School in 1808, but samplers inscribed ‘Sidcot’ are very much rarer than those from Ackworth. The Fitzwilliam has several Quaker samplers, early ones for the City of London, later ones from Ackworth, but no examples of white darning samplers. Once removed from its backing and cleaned Ann Young’s sampler would be an interesting addition to our increasing holding of Quaker examples. title: sampler LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Applied Arts STABLE URL ---------- url: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/225717 CATEGORIES ------ category: embroidery DIMENSIONS ---------- dimension: Height units: cm value: 19.2 dimension: Width units: cm value: 18.76
