object type: A soldier is seen at close-quarters from behind, climbing a ladder from the trench to go 'over the top'. Another soldier, helmeted head pressed downwards and face unseen, is seen doing the same further along the trench. In a narrow margin along the upper edge of the image, other soldiers are sketchily represented moving with heads down and bayonets out in front. A figure holding his arms up at upper left may have been shot down, but this is far from clear.
