Daniel sits in a cave at centre right, left leg crossed over right, drapery around his groin, his hands held together in an attitude of prayer, his eyes raised heavenwards through an opening in the cave roof. He is surrounded by lions, seven male and two female, a few asleep or in repose, others snarling or agitated. The bones of previous victims, including a human skull, are seen in the foreground.
