object type: Lacquer box, Shibayama style. Box, lacquer applied with shell, coral, ivory, jade, tortoiseshell and wood with silver metal rims. Rectangular box with rounded corners and a seated lid (A). The lid and sides are encrusted with intricately carved chrysanthemum, peony, hydrangea and other flower heads and leaves in coloured shell, aogai (small pieces of blue-green shell), coral, ivory, tortoiseshell, wood and jade of white, yellow, pink, green and brown. The interior of the box and the base are nashiji (shimmering spangles).
