object type: Steel die for making buttons, with the arms of the Imperial family of Napoleon (but without the crossed sceptres of state) and inscribed for record keeping on the edge of the die 'PRINCE NAPOLEON' and on the shaft '670'.  Steel, 48mm diam. and 42mm tall; for striking buttons 32mm diam.  Prince Napoleon was Napoléon-Joseph-Charles-Paul Boneparte (1822-91), sometimes known as 'Plon Plon', a nephew of Napoleon I and for a time the designated successor to Napoleon III.
