object type: Pietà, wood, carved in very high relief; highly polychromed. The Virgin is seated, wearing a gilded veil and voluminous draperies. Her head is turned to the left as she gazes at Christ's right hand, which she lifts with her right hand. The body of Christ, naked except for a loin cloth, rests across her knees. His head is supported by her left knee. His face is turned away from the Virgin and his mouth is half open. At the bottom, the ground on which her draperies fall and on which her left foot rests, is carved on a separate piece of wood, the grain of which runs in the opposite direction; the join is most noticeable at the back.
