object type: Chinese reverse-painted mirror, made for the export market in a carved European giltwood frame.. A nobleman wearing a rank badge of a white crane, seated on a rock covered with a tiger skin. The man has a long white beaded necklace and rests his arm on a ceremonial drum. There a two white cranes at his feet and a servant to the right, bringing tea, with a river landscape beyond. In a carved European giltwood frame.
The outdoor scene shows a civil official. He is dressed in a dragon robe (jifu) because it has waves around the bottom, but it would be a stretch to say the artist was deliberately depicting a brown robe for a duke, marquis or son-in law of the emperor.
