The figures are supported on a shallow square base moulded to resemble cobbles, and having a mooring bollard with a rope wound round it in the viewer's right back corner. The girl stands with her feet together in front of the bollard . She wears a wide-brimmed hat, and a bodice with a low neckline, three-quarter sleeves, lacing over the stomacher, and a full skirt. Her shoes have pompoms on the top. The sailor steps forward on his right foot, and has his left leg stretched out behind him. He leans towards the girl. He has his left arm around her shoulders and takes her right hand in his. He is bareheaded, and carries his hat under his arm.
