object type: A watercolour drawing from the album PD.132-1973. This is a Chinese export watercolour depicting a flowering rose branch. Three pink roses are featured: one deep rose-pink bloom at the top left, a medium pink fully opened rose in the lower center, and a lighter pink rose on the far right. There are several thorns on the stem. The plant displays the characteristic compound leaves of roses; some leaves show brown edges. The painting demonstrates the fine brushwork characteristic of Chinese export art from the late 18th or early 19th century, combing traditional Chinese flower-and-bird painting style and Western botanical illustration.
