IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 41989 accession number: EC.6A-1938 DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Saturday 6 August 2011 updated: Friday 4 May 2012 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: Soft-paste porcelain containing bone ash, figure of Mars, press-moulded, with hand-modelled details, painted underglaze in blue, and over very slightly greenish lead-glaze in blue, green, yellow, pink, orange, red, pale purple, maroon, and brown enamels and gilt. The concave underside is glazed except for the feet, and has a small circular ventilation hole near the back. The rounded square base has five scroll supports, and a pierced rocaille motif between the front two. The front of the base is decorated with applied flowers and leaves. At the back there is a tree trunk with two low branches bearing polychrome applied flowers and leaves on each side, and a rectangular aperture to take an attachment low down in its back. Mars stands erect with his head turned three-quarters to his left. His weight is on his left leg and his right is relaxed beside it. A shield is strapped to his left arm which is bent at the elbow and has the hand on his hip. His right arm (which originally held a spear) is extended towards the viewer. He has a brown beard, and wears a gold bracelet on his right wrist, and armour all' antica: a maroon helmet with a gold underside, and a brown crest with yellow, red, and maroon plumes; an underglaze blue cuirass with gold scales on the front, and in the centre a yellow mask; pale blue lion's masks on his shoulders; a turquoise skirt with pteruges of different colours; turquoise toeless lace-up boots with a maroon border at the top. His shield is purple, red, and yellow. On his left there is a vertical pink drape bearing a red cross.
