The underside is unglazed and has four patch marks surrounding a large central ventilation hole. The group is supported on a rectangular pedestal base. The lower register has projecting corners decorated with rosettes, and on the sides, swags in relief. Above, the sides are fluted and concave with a moulding round the top. The mother sits in a high-backed chair, resting her left foot on a green footstool or kneeler. She has her left arm round the shoulders of a little boy who rests his elbows on her left thigh. She points with her right hand to a book on her lap, which he is trying to read. She wears a cap, a dress with a kerchief round its neckline, and an apron decorated with scattered sprays of gold leaves. Gold lines run round the lower edge of her sleeves, bodice, edge of the apron, and hem. The boy wears a coat, breeches, and shoes. The figures are white except for their hair, flesh and features. There is a red line round the edge of the book.
