IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 49551 accession number: E.11.1898 DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Saturday 6 August 2011 updated: Tuesday 25 February 2020 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: Stone figure of a scorpion. One of several found in this temple deposit and possibly a reference to the 'Scorpion King' who ruled before Narmer (the first king whose name we know). Scopions were also believed to protect as well as threaten. Here, in a royal context it seems more likely that the animal protected the king because of its close association with early Egyptian royalty. This type of stone is called steatite and was only used for smaller scale objects such as this. It is a soft stone and easy to carve. title: figurine LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Antiquities STABLE URL ---------- url: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/49551 TECHNIQUES ---------- carved CATEGORIES ------ category: figure DATING ------ creation date: 3000 - 2500 creation date earliest: 3000 creation date latest: 2500 culture: Predynastic culture: Early Dynastic DIMENSIONS ---------- dimension: Height units: cm value: 10.5 EXHIBITIONS HISTORY ------------------- title: Gifts of the Nile: Ancient Egyptian Faience CITATIONS -------- Ancient Hierakonpolis Gifts of the Nile : ancient Egyptian faience Hierakonpolis II --- IMAGES surrogate: large format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/ant/ant32/E_11_1898.jpg height: 507 pixels width: 760 pixels surrogate: mid format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/ant/ant32/mid_E_11_1898.jpg height: 334 pixels width: 500 pixels surrogate: original format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/ant/ant32/E_11_1898.jpg height: 507 pixels width: 760 pixels surrogate: preview format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/ant/ant32/preview_E_11_1898.jpg height: 167 pixels width: 250 pixels surrogate: large format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/564/341/large_E_11_1898_200805_mfj22_mas.jpg height: 683 pixels width: 1024 pixels surrogate: mid format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/564/341/mid_E_11_1898_200805_mfj22_mas.jpg height: 333 pixels width: 500 pixels surrogate: original location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/E.11.1898_200805_mfj22_mas.tif surrogate: preview format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/564/341/preview_E_11_1898_200805_mfj22_mas.jpg height: 167 pixels width: 250 pixels surrogate: large format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/623/657/large_E_11_1898_200805_mfj22_dc1.jpg height: 683 pixels width: 1024 pixels surrogate: mid format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/623/657/mid_E_11_1898_200805_mfj22_dc1.jpg height: 333 pixels width: 500 pixels surrogate: original format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/623/657/E_11_1898_200805_mfj22_dc1.jpg height: 2912 pixels width: 4368 pixels surrogate: preview format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/623/657/preview_E_11_1898_200805_mfj22_dc1.jpg height: 167 pixels width: 250 pixels surrogate: zoom format: pyramid tiff location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/623/657/E_11_1898_200805_mfj22_dc1.ptif height: 2912 pixels width: 4368 pixels
