The spiral decoration is the usual way that the Egyptians showed imitation stoneware, as seen from pottery vessels dating to the pre-dynastic period. Theis object is large for a bead and it is possible that it was an object intended to symbolise a traditional weapon. However, the function and in fact date remains uncertain. The type of material (faience) is typical of that produced in Meroe (Nubia) during the Roman period, for this reason the object has been dated to this period. The object is complete with little damage to the surface. The material consists of crushed quartz pebbles which are then glazed with a glass-like material. object type: Bead with spiral decoration title: bead LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Antiquities STABLE URL ---------- url: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/53145 TECHNIQUES ---------- mouldmade TECHNIQUES ---------- glazed CATEGORIES ------ category: jewellery DATING ------ creation date: 100 - 400 creation date earliest: 100 creation date latest: 400 culture: Roman DIMENSIONS ---------- dimension: Width units: m value: 0.045 IMAGES surrogate: large format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/ant/ant32/E_398_1932.jpg height: 694 pixels width: 760 pixels surrogate: mid format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/ant/ant32/mid_E_398_1932.jpg height: 457 pixels width: 500 pixels surrogate: original format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/ant/ant32/E_398_1932.jpg height: 694 pixels width: 760 pixels surrogate: preview format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/ant/ant32/preview_E_398_1932.jpg height: 228 pixels width: 250 pixels
