Enamelled and gilt figures of Shakespear (sic) and Milton were offered for sale in the catalogue of the Derby and Chelsea sale held by Mr Christie on 29 March 1773 and three following days. This figure was probably derived from a bronzed plaster Milton by John Cheere, dated 1749 which seems to have been a stock model. The relief on the pedestal is the Expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, which is mentioned in Milton's 'Paradise Lost'. Another possible source was a terracotta model of Milton mentioned in the sculptor,Scheemaker's sale.referenceterm-106779adlib-term-106779f0706fcd-d94c-3987-bcb5-f7f794332b6a18th Century, Latereferenceterm-107437adlib-term-10743796f4b0d1-fc11-39ff-ae91-1b23d888d479George IIIreferenceterm-110521adlib-term-110521b57fb046-bca3-3371-a721-2093adc3a282literalEnglandEnglandcountryliteralDerbyshireDerbyshireregionDerbyreferenceterm-37414adlib-term-3741427d12e08-38a7-326d-8a7d-f3634c083b89biscuit porcelainHeightcm18Widthcm10.2referencemedia-34299adlib-media-3429933e93dd4-39b7-3b76-a662-dd6f1e454832jpegaa/aa2/C_108_1932_281_29.jpg1heightpixels740widthpixels57016162482209151imagejpegaa/aa2/mid_C_108_1932_281_29.jpg1heightpixels649widthpixels50016162482209151imagejpegaa/aa2/C_108_1932_281_29.jpg1heightpixels740widthpixels57016162482209151imagejpegaa/aa2/preview_C_108_1932_281_29.jpg1heightpixels325widthpixels25016162482209151image0media
