DESCRIPTIVE DATA

object type: Earthenware, moulded, tin-glazed and painted in copper lustre. Circular with a wide sloping rim decorated with slanting gadroons in low relief, and pierced at the top by two suspension holes; deep vertical sides, a flat base with a raised boss with slightly raised slanting gadroons, surrounding a circular medallion in the centre. The medallion is decorated with a shield charged with a bull passant. The gadroons on the boss and rim are decorated alternately with a stylized flower on a stalk, and small circles on a trellis or net. The base is decorated with a band of flowerheads linked by pairs of long serraated leaves, flanked by bands of small circulres on a trellis or net. On the sides are flowerheads in panels formed by trefoils and curving stems. The back has a multi-petalled flower in the centre, and scrolling stems of feather or fern-like leaves over the rest of the surface.
