IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 74532 accession number: C.322-1928 DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Saturday 6 August 2011 updated: Wednesday 27 March 2019 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: Pale red and buff agate ware, coated on the exterior of the body with white slip, except for the lip, and a band immediately above the base, with four horizontal double bands of rouletted beading, and deeply incised decoration under pale yellow lead-glaze. The jug stands on a projecting footring, and has bulbous sides, an incurved cylindrical neck, sparrow beak lip, and strap handle with vertical grooves on each side, and a kick at the lower end. On the front below the lip is the inscription 'George Benteley 1779/Fill us the Other Jug'. The rest of the body is decorated with incised and carved stylized sprays of flowers and foliage which overlay the central rouletted bedading. On the neck there are seven vertical sprays of paired leaves with a large leaf at the top end of each.
