The underside of the base is open and unglazed. Temperance, represented as a woman, stands on a roughly circular rocky base coloured green beside a pile of masonry supporting a jar with water issuing from its mouth. She faces to the front and rests her left hand on the top of the masonry. Herbrown hair is dressed in a chignon at the back of her head with tresses hanging down from it onto her shoulders. She wears a long green dress, with a low neck and elbow-length sleeves which is open at the front to show a black stomacher and petticoat, and black shoes.
