The glazes are rather crudely applied, and there is an unglazed area on the viewer's right at the back of the base. The shepherd stands beside a tree stump on a roughly circular base with Rococo style scrolled and frilled sides and grassy top; the underside is hollow and unglazed. A sheep dog is seated beside him in front of the stump. The shepherd's left hand is raised to just above shoulder level, and his right arm and hand are extended towards the right. The crook originally in his left hand is missing. His hair is tied back in a bunch at the back, and he wears a round hat with a turned up brim, a pale blue shirt under a green unbuttoned jacket, yellow breeches, and brown shoes.
