DESCRIPTIVE DATA
----------------
object type: Greyish-buff stoneware, thrown and turned, with applied handle, and applied and impressed motifs, painted in cobalt-blue and pale manganese-purple, salt-glazed and gilded; pewter mounts, thumbpiece and cover. The jug has a bulbous body standing on a slightly spreading foot with turned bands, a short cylindrical neck with turned rilling and a more pronounced cordon at the top. The strap handle, of shallow D profile with a central longitudinal depression, is attached to the neck level with the cordon, and below its lower end had an upward curl of clay. The sides are decorated with three circles, each enclosing two elliptical shapes formed by applied strips of flowerheads and beading in relief. In each ellipse there is a smaller ellipse with a rosette at the cardinal points. In the spaces above the circles there are three larger single rosettes, and in the spaces below, a single rosette, two groups of three rosettes, and another single rosette. The background is coloured blue, except for the ellipses which are pale manganese-purple with blue centres, and all the rosettes are gilded. The foot is encircled by a blue horizontal band, and the neck by two. There is a pewter mount round the top of the handle, hinged to the cone-shaped thumb piece, and domed cover decorated with circles of gadrooning and beading.
