IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 76595 accession number: C.2071-1928 DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Saturday 6 August 2011 updated: Tuesday 23 August 2022 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: Brown stoneware, thrown, with applied moulded and carved decoration, dark brown wash, and salt-glaze, painted after firing in blue, green, yellow, red, and white enamels. Cylindrical with sloping sides and a strap handle. The interior has a cup-shaped insertion to reduce the capacity of the tankard. A hole in the top of the handle, and a ledge below the rim indicate that it was provided with a hinged cover and thumbpiece. Around the middle of the body there is a wide band of carved narrow vertical diaper ornament painted in red, blue, yellow and green with a horizontal row of white spots above and below. Above and below those, is a horizontal band of red and yellow interlace enclosing blue diamond-shapes surrounded by white spots, and there are further band of spots below the rim and below the lower band of interlace. Round the base in relief is the name and date, 'HANS . KELLNER .1.6.3.0.' painted in white, and two brooch-like reliefs below the handle.
