The jug stands on a high moulded foot. It has an ovoid body, a cylindrical neck with a male mask in relief on the front, a loop handle with a short 'tail' on its lower end, and a shallow cover attached by means of a pewter hinge and fan-shaped thumb-rest attached to the top of the handle. On the front there is an oval medallion, framed by C scrolls, flowers and foliage, enclosing the race between Atalanta and Hippomenes in a landscape. The rest of the body is decorated with detached sprays of flowers, and garlands The mask has manganese-purple hair, beard, and eyebrows, dark yellowish-brown lips, and blue eyes. There are double yellow horizontal lines round the top of the neck, its junction with the body, and above the junction of the body and foot. On the back of the handle there are three floral sprays.
