DESCRIPTIVE DATA
----------------
object type: Dial: Circular dial plate, 10 inches in diameter, with matted brass centre engraved with two birds. Applied silvered chapter ring with minutes numbered every 5 and signed between VII and V ‘Richard Ganthony London'. The dial plate probably from a provincial 30 hour longcase clock with a square dial, as the engraved decoration is typical of that type, the plate has been made roughly circular and there are filled holes used to fix a previous chap¬ter ring. Circular dials normally consisted of a flat engraved plate silvered all over. The Ganthony chapter ring was never of that type so it probably has no original connection with the case. Pierced and blued steel hour hand, modern stamped steel minute hand of serpentine design.

Movement: 8 day movement of uncertain origin and date, but not London work and probably more recent than the case. Striking train on right, with outside count wheel, winds anti-clockwise. Going train on left, with anchor escapement and seconds pendulum, winds clockwise, un-grooved, small diameter barrels to give 8 day duration with limited fall for weights. Re-used movement with spare dial foot hole near top of front plate. Design of escapement pro¬duces large pendulum arc, so pendulum hits sides of case thus rendering accurate timekeeping impossible.

Case: Mahogany carcase, veneered and cross banded with figured mahogany. Typical Regency design with break arch hood and square topped trunk door. Dial glass in brass bezel fixed to turned wooden rim which is hinged to front of hood.
object type: longcase 'grandmother'clock, with 8 day movement.
