Hard-paste porcelain applied on the biscuit with turquoise, green aubergine, yellow and black glazes. Of Ming bronze shape, the body is of square section tapered towards the base and suppoorted on a high, slightly splayed foot of ruyi-shaped outline coloured black on the exterior. Each of the four sides is edged with a green-ground key-fret border pencilled in black and decorated with a recessed panel showing strange mythical creatures, mostly composite, rising from amongst swirling incised waves in pale green; the recognizable creatures being a dragon pursuing a 'flaming pearl', a carp and a Buddhist Lion, all picked out in yellow, aubergine and green outlined in black. The two opposite sides are set with a projecting handle in the form of a downward-gazing phoenix head. The cover is wood with a jade finial. The interior is glazed in yellowish-cream. The mouthrim, footrim and base are left unglazed and with scattered patches burnt orange in the firing. object type: Censer and cover.
