object type: Buff coloured earthenware octagonal vessel of a very soft texture.  Used for grinding Chinese ink.
Each facet has a black glazed ground with characters in relief, painted with a brownish yellow glaze.  The inscription reads "Just as the sun rises; Just as the Moon is everlasting"
