Serfs

Scope note

Under feudalism, people in a condition of servitude, required to render specified services to a lord, commonly attached to the lord's land, and their services transferred with it from one landholder to another. For free people who support themselves by tilling the soil, either as small landholders or hired laborers, use "peasants."
