Use generally for those in a position of power or authority who exercise it oppressively, cruelly, or unjustly, especially but not exclusively those holding supreme political power. Use specifically for rulers of that title in ancient Greece and Sicily who usurped power from the legal authorities, often with popular support. For nonhereditary rulers who exercise absolute, unrestricted power over the government of a nation, whether or not cruelly or unjustly, use "dictators."
