<engraving (printmaking process)>

Scope note

Use for the intaglio process in which the design is incised into the printing plate. Distinct from "wood engraving (process)," which is a process for relief printing. Historically, has sometimes been used to refer to printmaking processes in general, usually those employing printing plates; use the appropriate specific term. For the single step of incising the design, use "engraving (incising)."
