India paper (rag paper)

Scope note

Thin tough opaque rag paper made originally for the Oxford University Press in imitation of paper from eastern Asia, used chiefly for the printing of Bibles. Distinct from "China paper" ,which originated in China, has a tighter fiber bond, and is typically used for steel engraving and woodcut proofs, and as lithographic transfer paper.
