Bloom

Scope note

Use broadly to describe the altered appearance of numerous surfaces usually caused by the introduction of water vapor or moisture from the atmosphere, for example the cloudiness of varnish or the efflorescence on masonry walls. Distinguished from "blanching" which is the milky appearance of resinous or oily film following application of a solvent.
