Percussion locks

Scope note

Firearm ignition mechanisms in which a fulminate or gunpowder priming powder is struck and explodes, thereby detonating the propellant. The most developed versions feature a percussion cap, fitted over a nipple screwed into the breech and pierced by a small hole that connects with the propellant; when struck by the hammer, the cap sends a small jet of flame into the propellant, igniting it.
