Octrois

Scope note

Use for the structures at which a local toll or duty was collected, originally by towns and cities, later by monarchs, on certain goods that passed into their territories for local consumption by the inhabitants; found especially from the 17th to the 19th century in France and Italy. Term derives from the name of the tax itself.
