Dumbbell tenements

Scope note

Use for apartment houses offering an improvement over standard long, narrow tenements by including air and light shafts between adjacent buildings resulting in characteristic dumbbell-shaped plans; common in New York City between 1879 and 1901, after which their construction was banned.
