Aspes

Scope note

Round, oval, or bilobated shields of Classical Greece and later, Doric in origin, made of layers of cow hide and large enough to protect most of the body. Early models were held in the hand; later versions had an armlet set diagonally, with a handle near the edge, and were carried on the arm.
