Brushes made for use by artists from animal hair or synthetic material in a variety of shapes and sizes, but generally small enough to be handled with precision. The term pencil was used until the 19th century to describe small pointed sable or camel hair brushes. For larger brushes made for applying paint over large areas, especially as a protective coating, use "paintbrushes."
