Récades

Scope note

Ceremonial weapons of the Fon people of Dahomey, generally in the shape of an axe or crooked club with a sculpted wooden handle, and, in those of axe shape, an elaborately carved metal or wooden head. They serve as symbols of power, either of the gods of Dahomey or of its king, and are used in various secular and religious ceremonial contexts.
