Catapults

Scope note

Ancient military devices used to hurl heavy projectiles such as large stones, consisting essentially of a long upright arm with a spoon-shaped or slinglike holder to carry the projectile at the upper end, the lower end fastened to posts or a movable frame. The upper end is winched down by cords until parallel to the ground; when released, the torsion-generated force propels the projectile.
